The Eagles Trip to France

On May the 8th, The Eagles went on a trip to France with a bus driver named Jerry. On the way they experienced the wonderful views of the countryside, as well as travelling by Eurotunnel. Upon arrival they went to the Nausicaa Aquarium in Boulogne, after that the Eagles went to their accommodation in Le Portel. The following day the Eagles headed off to Le Touquet’s market. There they enjoyed browsing the market stalls. After browsing and buying wares, they travelled to Beissent to visit a traditional chocolate factory and watch how chocolate is made. They got to sample chocolate made there, afterwards they headed to the English cemetery and paid their respect to the soldiers who fought for their country. They then went to the Auchan supermarket in St. Martin Boulogne. There they had fun buying and looking at wares as well as looking at the different types of shops. The following day they packed up for the departure back to England, but before they left they went on a town trail in Boulogne, there they enjoyed sightseeing, after they had lunch they went to the bakery “Le Fournil” in Wierre-Effroy. There they saw how bread was made as well as making their own croissants. Then they got on the bus and headed home to their welcoming families.

Foundation and Nursery

The Ducklings and Hedgehogs enjoyed a walk down to the Wildlife area on Tuesday where they explored the stream looking for different creatures. They paddled in their wellies and carefully turned over lots of stones in their search, finding a variety of water beasts to examine. The children noticed lots of changes in the environment which provoked plenty of discussion and enthusiastic exploration.

Year 5

As part of their water theme the Owls spent their ‘Go Explore’ session on Tuesday on the river bank. The children were tasked with measuring the speed of the river using natural objects, a tape measure and a stop watch. Knowledge of Winnie-the-Pooh became very useful as a game of ‘Pooh Sticks’ has never been so useful for science and geography research. Despite the continual rain the class worked very well and enjoyed their morning in the fresh air.

Year 3

The Badgers sat in total silence (yes, truly!) down in the woods just beyond the wildlife area and thought of some amazing descriptive words to use for their story settings, by using their senses. They then used water colour pencils to sketch some of the things they could see around them which they then converted into paint on their return to school – though one rather bouncy badger managed to leap spectacularly into the stream to investigate the effects of total immersion of a watercolour drawing…….

Year 4

With a warming break in the latest chilly spring weather, the Squirrels set off, squared paper and note books in hand, to the wildlife area. Working in pairs, the task was to map the area to include as much information as could be noted. We found it to be harder than we thought as having a birds-eye view of things required some forethought. In our topic of Town & City we have been looking at why places are where they are and this tied in nicely with our next task of finding an ideal spot for a base camp and potentially the beginnings of a small village. In small groups the ideal location was found and each group tried to persuade the others’ why theirs was the best. We had our very own Location, Location, Location!

Year 6 First Aid Training

The Eagles Bushcraft session took place on site this week, where they learnt all about keeping safe in the outdoors. The children learned about the potential risks including: poisoning, cuts, burns, broken bones, drowning, weather related problems such as sunburn and hypothermia, and bites and stings. The children were shown examples of some of nature’s first aid including meadowsweet and balsam fern (both antiseptics) and plantain which can help to stop bleeding, before going on to learn some basic first aid procedures such as the recovery position and bandaging. This session will count towards the first aid element of the Eagles Gold Springmead Award.

Nursery and Reception

Our Go Explore session focused on games involving nature. We role played being a dandelion parachute, a blossom, a woodlouse and a butterfly. Role play is great for getting you in the moods, qualities and behaviours of natures’ life forms, grafting them into yourself and letting you feel your own heart and mind responses to them. It is wonderful to see children appreciating the feelings of other creatures and phenomena. We spent time using observational skills to play a ‘duplication’ game. Children had to find similar objects to match a selection.

Our finale was a ‘friendship web’ where we created a huge web of string to show how we were all interconnected through our friendships with each other. Again, an opportunity in our busy world, to think carefully and take time to consider our place in the world – a magical afternoon!

Longridge Report

The following report from Peggy Sparrow gives us a lovely insight into a residential trip, thank you Peggy!

On Monday 22nd April the Owls set off, packed for Longridge, where they would stay for 2 nights away from their parents. When they got to Longridge they put all their bags in a little room. They then went to have lunch. After lunch they got split into 2 groups – one of the groups went to the Jacobs Ladder. This is where there are 10 logs, all on top of each other, and each time you go up a log the gap got bigger. The other group went to do Go Karts, where you had to peddle around the track. It’s a bit like driving a car but much smaller and you have to peddle. We then had a bit of a rest, as our rooms were ready so we could go and see them. After about half an hour we went onto are next activity, Bell Boating. Bell boats are basically two canoes joined together. We all did this, but in different Bell boats. When we got back we had our supper and then went to our rooms to let our food go down. After about half an hour we all went into the park to burn off our energy so we could get to sleep more quickly, as we were all excited about the next day. Before we went to sleep we went up to the little room that we put our bags in the morning. Up there, Mr Munckton said, we were to have our tuck shop and we were going to buy some food for the next day. We got a packet of Hula Hoops, 3 sweets, a drink, and a chocolate bar; you could also have a hot chocolate with marshmallows if you wanted one. We also had a quiz from Mr Munckton, boys against girls. The quiz was really fun but quite challenging. After that we were all tired as it was 9.oo pm so we went to bed. The next morning we were all up for 8.30 am as that was when breakfast was. After breakfast, one group went to do the Leap of Faith. The Leap of Faith is a high wobbly pole that you have to climb up and get onto a platform before you jump to the trapeze. Most people got to the top but a few didn’t as it was too high and wobbly. The other group went rafting, where you build a raft and then put it onto the river and paddle on it. We did the rafting after the break and once built we raced boys against girls to the other side of the river and back. The girls just won!

After lunch one group went to the Giant Swing and the other went to the Water Orbs. The Giant Swing is a big swing for two people and the other team mates pull you up before you drop and swing over the river. The Water Orbs are big hamster balls that you go inside and run on water. It is really hard to do! The next day we climbed the Climbing Wall, which was really high. Some made it to the top, but not all as it was hard to find the grips.

I think Longridge was really fun and was a good residential trip. I would recommend it to anyone over 8 years old for parties. I learned that being part of a team is important because it’s fun to work together and you need each other to complete the tasks. It was also fun to be away from Mum and Dad and my sister for a few nights!

Can I go back please?

Nursery & Yr R

We read the Aesop Fable, The North Wind and the Sun, and then investigated wind by making our own streamers and running in the sunshine!

Year 1 @Bristol

The Rabbits thoroughly enjoyed their day @Bristol, exploring the wonderful hands-on science museum and travelling through space with Ernest the Bear in the Planetarium, as part of this term’s ‘Our World’ theme. The children were able to pump water, launch balloons, test their reflexes, put a human body together, measure their heart rate, play at being archaeologists, try out being an animator, build a house and more. Everyone was sad when it was time to leave – there was so much more to see and do!

Year 4

Sensational Squirrels at Kilve Court

What a fantastic time the Squirrels had, and what amazing adventures, at the beautiful Georgian house, Kilve Court. The first time away on a school residential trip is a time in which each member of the class faces a huge collection of challenges. One of the first of these was the fitting of the sheet. Despite having studied in depth the properties of a rectangle, the matching of the bed and the sheet proved to be a little tricky! The days were filled with Team Building, a scarily high climbing wall, super-fast grass sledging, plunging nets in Pond-dipping, swinging and dangling from Low Ropes and an amazing Maze! Everyone encountered his or her own trials and discovered how wonderful it felt to succeed. As well as becoming increasingly independent, the whole class also became team players. As there was no guarantee of being with a particular friend during the activities it meant ‘getting along’ was also a requirement for the success of the trip. The result has been a new respect for each other and further friendships being formed.

Year 3 & 4 Netball versus Beckington

On Monday afternoon Beckington were the visitors for a Year 3 & 4 netball fixture. Both teams were intent on attacking and the game was played at a great pace. With space at a premium on the small court the players had to work really hard to lose their markers. Both teams worked hard to move the ball quickly into the attacking third but it was Beckington who took the lead. The lead was short lived though as Springmead responded with a point of their own. The game continued end to end but the attacking players on both teams could not take their chances and the score remained level until after several attacking rebounds Beckington managed to score a second point. Springmead continued to press for an equaliser but despite several opportunities the ball wouldn’t drop and Beckington managed to hold their advantage.

Year 5 & 6 Netball versus North Bradley

The Year 5 & 6 netball team made the trip to North Bradley on Thursday afternoon. Despite the damp conditions the match was able to go ahead and captain Martha Atkinson won the toss allowing Springmead to start with the first centre pass. With the extra space on the North Bradley court Springmead were able to move the ball with speed from end to end and soon took the lead. North Bradley struck back almost immediately and started to put pressure on the Springmead defence of Angus Walsby and Charlie Shakespeare. The defence stood firm and allowed centre, Jacob Miller, to move the ball quickly to attackers Atkinson and Charlie Herd who, after a few early sighters, soon found their range and by halftime had amassed a 1 – 5 lead. The three changes made at halftime did not weaken the Springmead dominance on the game and the second half continued in similar fashion although the change of ends seemed to disrupt the shooting ability of the Springmead attackers and several opportunities were missed. The new defensive pairing of Campbell Goff and Bella Pullin continued to frustrate the North Bradley attackers. Eventually Louis Mansfield and Martha Atkinson started to find some success with their shooting and stretched their lead to 1 – 7. North Bradley also managed to break their second half duck but it was Springmead who completed the scoring which made the final score 2 – 8 and a second good victory for the senior netball team.

Mendip Junior Cross Country League

On Tuesday 5th March, in glorious spring sunshine, Oakhill was the venue for the fourth Mendip Junior Cross Country League event of the year.

We travelled to Oakhill with a bit team or 21 runners from year 3,4, 5 and 6 and were able to field full teams in all four races.

All children put in a fantastic effort! Well done to Zakarie Rosenfeld, Harry Buchan and Louis Mansfield who all competed in their first race at the Mendip Junior Cross Country League.

As the newsletter goes to print we are still awaiting race results; when they are published you can find them on the playground notice board.

Year 3 and 4

The Badgers and Squirrels had a lovely time using our outdoor stage to practise their PSHE skills and literacy skills and produce drama sketches inspired by the things they could smell, hear and see on a beautiful spring day. (OK, so it’s not officially quite spring yet, but it felt like it out in the garden.)

Year 1

On a lovely Spring Monday morning, the Rabbits ventured down to the wildlife area for their Go Explore session. After reading The Gruffalo, the children searched the area for natural objects to create a big picture of The Gruffalo, and the snake on the ground.

Year 2

On Tuesday afternoon the Otters spent time thinking about and writing adjectives and similes to describe the trees and plants they found. They were using their senses to think about what they saw, could smell and what things felt like. Some interesting adjectives and similes were written, well done!

Year 6 Bushcraft Charity Challenge

On Wednesday the Year 6 children stole the march on the rest of the school by completing their charity challenge. Their adventure involved them putting everything the Hotsons have taught them into place with a series of bushcraft challenges along a 10 km walk. Everyone did really well and came back full of excitement having completed their mission and now set to collect in their charity money.

On Tuesday 5th February a very damp Millfield Prep School in the shadow of Glastonbury Tor was the venue for the third league event of the year. Although very wet underfoot the rain just about managed to stay away for the duration of the races. With each of the four races becoming more competitive as the season has progressed the Springmead runners were going to have to be at their best to match their previous results. For the first time this season we were able to enter a full lower school girls team, with Taylor Milsom joining Arabella Goff and Freya Buglass. All of the runners performed brilliantly in the difficult conditions with special mentions for Freya Buglass coming 6th in the lower school girls’ race and to Eddie Donson for continuing even after his shoe came off! Eddie didn’t match his previous highest placed finish but still managed to finish 38th out of 92 runners! Top placed lower school boy was Stanley Pagett (11th), upper school girl was Tilly Arnold (18th) and upper school boy was Luca Morgan (17th).

We were whisked into a newly-painted room packed with mysterious boxes. Our initial briefing as Trainee Archaeologists trained us how to hold the ancient and precious pieces, what clues we could look for and how we could build a picture of the sorts of people who lived in Ancient Egypt. Indeed some of the artefacts could be used today such as the wooded pillar, not dissimilar to the basins in hairdressers, used as a pillow. Our investigative skills were obviously on top form as we passed the Challenge with flying colours.

We also explored the Exhibition which was full of fascinating facts and objects; one of the most popular was the 3,500 year old Mummy that could only be seen once two glowing blue buttons had been pressed. It was so exciting to see all the amazing things which had been saved from so long ago and which gave us such an insight into life all that time ago.

Year 5 – Field Trip to Bristol Museum

The Owls enjoyed a fantastic day at The Bristol Museum and Art Gallery. With the Ancient Greek workshop having been cancelled, the class got to spend their time exploring the different exhibitions from archaeology and world cultures to wildlife galleries and from minerals to dinosaurs. The children then focused on their personal favourite piece of art from the top floor of the museum whether it was painting, metal work, ceramics or sculpture and completed a short discovery task. The highlight of the trip was the time spent in the photography competition exhibition. The children were wowed by the dynamic photographs that were part of a worldwide competition. A great trip that was over all too soon!
