Physical Education and Sports

Physical activities are a vital part of developing the whole child consequently P.E. is given high priority at Springmead School, from the nursery to Year 6. The children have regular P.E. lessons both indoors and outdoors. We believe so strongly in the development of the physical skills that we devote far more curriculum time to the subject than other schools; over three hours curriculum time is devoted to the subject each week. This is further supported by many extra-mural clubs and activities.
The teaching of P.E. is carried out by specialist teachers who follow the National Curriculum, covering gym, games, swimming, athletics and dance. Rugby, soccer, tennis, netball, hockey and rounders games all feature at various stages of the academic year both during lessons and through clubs. In the early years time is devoted to the acquisition of basic skills, the development of fine and gross motor skills and getting children to enjoy physical activities. Once the basic skills are in place, tactics, strategies and rules can be introduced to allow meaningful team games. At all stages children are encouraged to participate and do their best and enjoy sport, whatever their innate ability. Inter-schools, intra-school matches, galas and Sports Day are chances for every child to participate competitively.

All children from reception class to Year 6 go swimming every week. At Springmead, swimming is regarded as an essential part of the sports curriculum and emphasis is placed upon achieving national standard awards along with the opportunity to compete. Swimming is the best sport for all round stamina, suppleness and strength. As Amateur Swimming Association swimming teachers, we see swimming as a life skill. It is also the most effective sport to physically develop children without the stresses on young joints and ligaments that impact sports have as it is a non-weight bearing activity. We place such emphasis on the development of swimming that we provide fortnightly, free family sessions at the local swimming pool!
We are very excited about the recent addition of our new sports playing field which we are using from September 2006. This facility will give us many more opportunities to encourage our youngsters to adopt a healthy sporting life and achieve their personal best!
