Hemington-Springmead Sports Fixture Year R-2

Thursday, June 30th, 2011

This week saw Key Stage One partake in our summer multi-sport tournament at Hemington School.   After being rained off the week before the weather held up and gave us a wonderful afternoon of fun and activity.  We completed a round robin of different sporting activity where we had to score as many points for our team as we could.

Mixed teams of Hemington and Springmead children allowed us to meet some new friends and the afternoon was a resounding success!  Congratulations to all who took part and a big well done to the winning team.

Year 3 – 6 Cricket v North Bradley

Thursday, June 30th, 2011

On Tuesday afternoon a mixture of Year 4 and Year 6 children took part in a cricket fixture with North Bradley School. Being a couple of players short North Bradley were always going to be at a disadvantage but on winning the toss they elected to field first and produced a good solid bowling and fielding performance to limit the Springmead total to 262 for 1. The stand out batter for Springmead being Kira Albiston who managed to not only find the boundary but also ‘nurdle’ the ball into gaps to keep the scoreboard ticking over. Having fewer players became an advantage for North Bradley when it came to batting as two of their team could bat twice!

This meant that Springmead would have to bowl and field very well – and this they did! All 8 players each bowled a tight over that kept North Bradley under pressure. When it came down to the last over both teams could have won but Charlie Herd kept his nerve and only conceded 6 runs whilst also taking a wicket. North Bradley finished with a score of 247 for 4 meaning that Springmead won by 15 runs.

Year 5 & 6 Athletics with Hemington

Thursday, June 30th, 2011

Despite the rain on Monday afternoon the athletics fixture for Year 5 & 6 with Hemington School still managed to go ahead! It was a much-shortened event as we were in the school hall. The children took part in 3 types of jumping activity, the Standing Long Jump, the Hop, Step, Jump and the Three Spring Jump. All the children involved worked hard to develop their technique and jump further with each attempt. This was a fantastic event in preparation for Sports Day!

Go Explore!

Thursday, June 30th, 2011

Year 3 Go Explore

During our Go Explore session on Monday the Badgers drew their own maps of the route they travelled to the wildlife area, putting on it key places they passed.  They drew their own plan of the wildlife area using a key to label different objects.  The Badgers also made their own quadrants to help them measure the angle of objects in the distance.  They enjoyed exploring the wildlife area and using their own quadrants.

Fun was had by all!

Year 6 Bushcraft day

Despite some very heavy storms the Eagles had a fantastic time acting out a scenario which entailed them working in groups to treat a casualty, build a shelter, make a fire, collect and purify water and search for things to eat. It was the culmination of some great sessions in the outdoors, which have encompassed the full breadth of the curriculum – from literacy, maths and science through to geography, history, design technology and PSHE. Thanks go to Mark and Lucy Hotson for their enthusiasm and hard work.

Foundation Go Explore

As we go to press the Foundation stage were off on their Go Explore session.  This week the children are working on becoming more aware and interested in the natural environment around them.  A game of ‘duplication’ (where the children have to find 10 or more objects that match the teachers objects) will allow the children to focus on the natural environment, focusing their attention and improving their memory and visual awareness.  Our littlest explorers will go on a nature walk to see what they can spot and to discuss any seasonal changes.  What fantastic fun!

They also reached the B final in the mixed stroke relay, finishing 7th overall. Well done, everyone!

Monday 13th June – Yr 3-4 Cricket v Beckington – Home.

Monday’s cricket event was enjoyed by all. Beckington batted resolutely and managed to score 217 for the loss of only 2 wickets. When Springmead began their innings they batted with more intensity and were soon in a commanding position. The loss of several quick wickets pegged back the scoring rates but the home team held on to win with a score of 234 for 5.
